Driver Medical Assessment (IMT)
IMT Electronic Certificate
What you need to know
The electronic medical certificate is required for the purposes of transcribing (transferring) driving licenses from other countries to Portugal and also for renewing the Portuguese driving license at key ages defined by law or for obtaining the driving license for the first time.
What is the electronic driving certificate (IMT)
Drivers with a foreign license who wish to transition to a Portuguese license.
Drivers over 50 years old, at each renewal.
Professional or special vehicle drivers (e.g. UBER, taxi, ambulances, school vehicles, heavy vehicles).
Driving students.
Who should obtain the electronic driving certificate for the IMT?
Personal identification document (citizen card, passport or residence permit).
Driving license to be transferred or renewed (if applicable).
Registration with the National Health Service (you must register at your health center).
Portuguese NIF (tax identification number).
Portuguese address.
If you wear glasses for driving or seeing into the distance, you must inform your doctor so that the corresponding code can be entered on the certificate.
Psychotechnical certificate (only for Group 2 drivers).
Have a smartphone or computer with an internet connection and the WhatsApp or Zoom application installed (free of charge). Alternatively, you can use a direct link that will be sent to the Client's email before the consultation.
What is required in the consultation?
Psychotechnical assessment is only necessary for some drivers. Drivers who fall into Group II require a psychotechnical certificate.
Confirm on the official website of the Institute of Mobility and Transport (IMT) .
First of all, a psychotechnical certificate is necessary in the following cases:
Professional drivers who drive vehicles in categories B, C and D;
Ambulance drivers;
Public transport drivers (light or heavy);
Taxi and TVDE Drivers (code 997 - e.g.: UBER or Bolt).
The psychotechnical certificate is only necessary at the medical consultation for the endorsement of these categories and at key renewal ages, as set out by the IMT.
Do I need to undergo a psychological evaluation to drive?
After a successful medical assessment, the original certificate is sent directly to the IMT electronically.
The Client always receives a PDF copy sent to the email address provided during scheduling (the email address must be written correctly and without errors, to facilitate communication).
The medical certificate is usually received within a few minutes. Whenever there is a situation that could delay the issuance or sending, the doctor will inform you during the consultation, giving the necessary instructions.
Whenever the Client does not have or has not provided any of the essential elements for the immediate issuance of the certificate, or when a complementary assessment by another health specialist is necessary, the medical certificate is issued and sent to the Client within an average period of 72 working hours after receipt of this information or evidence from our services.
How long will it take to receive my certificate?
When scheduling an appointment, the Client receives an email confirming the appointment and a Zoom link to ensure, from the outset, a method of communication with the doctor at the time of the appointment.
If the Client chooses to be contacted via WhatsApp or direct link, they will receive a call a few minutes before the appointment to the telephone number or email address provided.
The Client must be in a quiet and private place, so that the consultation can be carried out safely and with quality. Whenever necessary, the Client may have another person they trust with them who can help them with communication (e.g. an interpreter) or with handling the equipment (e.g. to hold the smartphone or to help with the computer). This person cannot answer or carry out the consultation for the Client.
During the consultation, the doctor will ask you some general health information, such as whether you have any allergies, your usual medications and your medical history.
A brief neurological examination will then be carried out, in which the Client must stand in front of the camera and follow the doctor's instructions.
Finally, all the data required to issue the certificate is confirmed again, and it will be sent to the IMT and to the Client's email.
The assessment is valid for 6 months, in accordance with the legislation.
How is the consultation carried out?
To request the TVDE endorsement (code 997) you must undergo a Medical Assessment with the categories that appear on your original driving license.
After obtaining the electronic certificate, you must transfer your driving license to IMT Online .
When you receive your new Portuguese driving license, you can then request the issuance of a new electronic medical certificate where the code 997 (TVDE) is added.
This procedure is mandatory under the rules established by the IMT .
The issuance of a new certificate is subject to the payment of issuance fees and the validity period of the initially carried out medical assessment (6 months).
I want to obtain endorsement 997 for TVDE (e.g. Uber driving) and I have a driving license from another country
I have categories C, D and/or E on my original driving license
